Newcastle United defender Jamal Lewis has hinted his loan spell at Sao Paulo could go beyond next summer.

SPFC.net cover comments from the Newcastle man today in which he insists he’ll be with the Brazilian club next season as well as this.

Lewis joined Sao Paulo on loan in the summer after he was deemed surplus to requirements at St James Park this season.

He’s only managed three appearances totalling 86 minutes to date, largely because he’s joined them in the middle of their season.

The 2024 Campeonato Brasileiro started on 13 April and runs until 8 December, a distinct difference from the way in which the European leagues run.

Lewis’ current loan deal runs until June 30th, 2025, meaning Lewis will technically spend two seasons at the Brazilian club across one loan deal.

It would be strange for him to return to Newcastle at that point given Sao Paulo would then be two months into the start of a new season and his current deal with the Magpies expires on 30 June 2025 also.

He’s now hinted what may be happening at that point as he insisted, he will be with the Brazilian side for next season.

“I’m very happy that I made the decision to play for São Paulo,” he said.

I’m really enjoying being part of the team. Living in the city, meeting the people and the fans has been an incredible experience.

“The coach told me to be patient, that I would have opportunities. I will also be here for next season.”
