Yari Verschaeren has told Het Belang van Limburg that he wasn’t bothered by Anderlecht’s efforts to sign Manchester United’s Christian Eriksen in the summer window.
Eriksen is in his final year of contract at Old Trafford. He scored three goals and registered three assists from nine games this season.
The 32-year-old waited until September to make his first appearance of the season, when he came off the bench in Manchester United’s defeat to Liverpool. His situation then with the Red Devils convinced a few clubs to try and secure his services.
This includes the Jupiler Pro League side. Their desire to sign the midfielder was revealed by Anderlecht managing director of sport Jesper Fredberg last month. The Dane didn’t end up leaving the Premier League side.
Verschaeren, who graduated from the Belgian club’s academy, made his way to their first team in 2018. The 23-year-old has made 190 appearances for Anderlecht so far and was confident of his place in the side, even if Eriksen had arrived in the last window.
When asked about Anderlecht’s interest in the Denmark international, he said: “That didn’t bother me. In recent years I have seen a lot of competitors pass through here.”
“Michel Vlap came for €8m, Samir Nasri signed here, Lior Refaelov too…. There were always others who could have been on my position and yes: I sometimes had bad periods, but usually I was the one who played most often. I owe that to myself anyway.”
