Napoli striker Romelu Lukaku has hit back at his critics from England after failed spells at Chelsea and Manchester United, insisting people never understood the type of player he was.
Lukaku has been speaking to the Friends of Sport podcast in Belgium about various topics, including his time in England with Chelsea, Everton and Manchester United.
The 31-year-old is currently at Napoli after securing a €30m move to the Italian side this summer to reunite with Antonio Conte.
It is the latest step in a varied career to date that’s seen him play for Anderlecht, Chelsea, West Bromwich Albion, Everton, Manchester United and Inter Milan.
His spells in England have produced mixed results, to say the least, with the striker undoubtedly shining at Everton, where he scored 87 goals in 166 games and is their top goal scorer in the Premier League era, but struggling at Manchester United and Chelsea.
He managed 42 goals and 12 assists in 96 games for United and just 15 goals and two assists in 59 games for Chelsea across two different spells.
He’s now happy to be back in Italy and working under Conte once more but when asked about England, insisted his struggles were simply a case of him being miscast.
“In England they wanted to put me in a box,” he said.
“They see someone built like me and think new Drogba. I’m not like that. Didier was more with his back to the goal; he could keep the ball regardless of where it was played. That wasn’t my style.”
