Brendan Rodgers returned to Celtic in June 2023 and his arrival didn’t prove too good for Alexandro Bernabei.

Celtic signed the 24-year-old from Club Atlético Lanús in 2022 when Ange Postecoglou was in charge. The defender made 19 appearances in his debut season, but his game time was limited last season.

Bernabei was restricted to 429 minutes from nine games under Brendan Rodgers, before Celtic sent him out on loan to SC Internacional in March.

The left-back was a substitute until July, but his situation has improved since then. He’s been featuring regularly for the Brazilian club, making 16 appearances in all competitions.

His loan deal expires at the end of this year, and the South American club want to retain the Argentine. This has been revealed by Internacional president Alessandro Barcellos during an interview with Rádio Gaúcha, relayed by Terra.

The official has also revealed talks have been held with the Celtic man’s agent, to extend his stay on loan or a permanent transfer. Internacional are waiting for the Scottish side to make a decision.

“We will work with the club that owns the federative rights, to buy him or extend the loan, whatever strategy is possible. A conversation has already started with the player’s agent, who has expressed interest in staying, which is important in the process,” he said.

“We’re hoping for a favourable outcome, but this should only happen towards the end of the year. Our idea is to keep Bernabei, with each game that passes he becomes more valuable.”

Bernabei’s contract at Celtic lasts until 2027. Brendan Rodgers’ side have a decision to make on his future.
