FC Twente goalkeeper Lars Unnerstall has hit back at the media who labelled their clash with Manchester United as nothing more than a school trip, insisting they proved that wrong with their 1-1 draw.

The Twente start has been speaking to Voetbal International, via Voetbal Primeur, about the result at Old Trafford and how it helped them prove their doubters wrong.

Twente took on Manchester United in the first matchday of the Europa League league phase last night and had been billed as major underdogs beforehand.

The media in the Netherlands certainly took that stance, insisting that Manchester United would be walking away with a comfortable victory and even suggesting that Twente should treat the game as nothing more than a ‘school trip’.

The feeling was that they would be best served focusing on having a nice time and playing the tourists against Manchester United and at Old Trafford.

Instead, they pulled off a shock result as a 68th minute goal from Sam Lammers secured a point after Christian Eriksen had opened the scoring in the 35th minute.

That delighted Unnerstall, who had been left frustrated by the talk before the game and the lack of credit his team was given.

“In recent days you heard some people talking about a school trip,” he said.

“You heard things like that here and there. If you play such a match and don’t unjustly take a point, then that is very nice.

“I understand that people quickly look at the money, at the name of a club. But that didn’t count for us.

“I never had the feeling that we were heading for a much bigger opponent. You shouldn’t think that way. We wanted to show what FC Twente can do internationally. And we did that tonight with a very good match.”
