Everton are still interested in Stade Rennais defender Lorenz Assignon, but face competition from Marseille.

That’s according to journalist Fabrice Hawkins, who reports that Everton and Marseille are talking to Rennes about a loan deal with a purchase option included.

Everton are in need of a new right-back before the end of the transfer window, with the position having proven to be a problem one for them at the beginning of this season.

They have veterans Seamus Coleman and Ashley Young in the position as well as Nathan Patterson, but the latter has proven to unreliable in terms of fitness.

Coleman is also 35 while Young is 39, a clear sign that a new, long-term solution is needed even if youngster Roman Dixon has impressed after being handing his debut at Tottenham.

Assignon was linked with a move earlier this year after his loan spell at Burnley last season and Hawkins reports that talks are still ongoing for him.

According to him Everton and Marseille remain interested in the 24-year-old and are talking with Rennes regarding a loan deal with an option to buy included.

That could prove tricky for Everton as they only have one international loan spot left and are also trying to use that to sign Orel Mangala from Lyon. Perhaps it is a case of one or the other, depending on how the final two days of the transfer window progress.
