Benfica manager Roger Schmidt has spoken to the Portuguese media regarding the signing of Burnley attacking midfielder Zeki Amdouni, with the German saying the move is close but not done yet.

The Swiss international has been linked with a move to Benfica over the past week and after travelling to Lisbon yesterday.

O Jogo have reported on comments Schmidt has made in a press conference today when he was quizzed about the Burnley. He said the deal isn’t yet finalised, and he’s a player that he wants in his squad.

“At the moment they have not yet signed. Amdouni has arrived and I can say that we are very close to reaching that agreement. He’s showed great quality, he is a flexible player in terms of position, he can also be a second striker. He has the profile we are looking for and we are very happy with that,” said the Benfica boss.

Yesterday we covered reports from Portugal that Amdouni had arrived in Lisbon ahead of his proposed transfer to Benfica. There’s a lack of clarity on the specifics of the deal but that will emerge in time.

The youngster is said to have been keen on a move, and playing for Benfica will be a great opportunity to develop his career like so many others have done with the Liga Portugal giants.

Amdouni made 37 appearances for Burnley last season, scoring six goals. He’s contracted to the east Lancashire club until June 2028 after only arriving last summer.
