Wout Weghorst is ‘about to sign a contract’ with Ajax and finally bring an end to the longstanding saga of this summer.

That’s according to Soccer News, who cover comments from Ajax manager Francesco Farioli and goalkeeper Remko Pasveer on the impending transfer.

They explain that Brian Brobbey is set to be Ajax’s starter against Jagiellonia Bialystok on Thursday, after Chuba Akpom started the first game against the Polish side.

Farioli could have a decision to make, though, as Weghorst is set to arrive imminently from Burnley.

The Netherlands international has been linked with a move back to the Dutch giants all summer and a deal is now progressing, with it now reported that he is about a sign a contract until 2026.

That’s something Farioli is excited about, having seemingly been convinced by the player himself when speaking to him.

“Things are going on; I’m not going to lie. It could be. But it’s not over yet. We have to wait for the official paperwork,” he said.

“He has a great desire to be part of this project. We need that freshness. A good mentality in this group is crucial.

“Everyone will make their minutes. The discussion about the starters will only increase. But I like to follow that discussion in the media. If everything is respectful, that is only beautiful.”

The question remains of where Weghorst will fit into the current squad given their current options.

They already have plenty of forward options as already mentioned, with Brian Brobbey and Chuba Akpom competing for places alongside Julia Rijkhoff.

The Burnley man will surely know all about that and Ajax will know all about him too, something goalkeeper Remko Pasveer was certainly keen to point out.

“Everyone knows Wout,” he said.

“For example, of the Dutch national team and what he can bring to a team. Wout is always terribly irritating to play against, but nice to have with you.

“He works like a horse and keeps the entire rearguard busy. That’s what we need. So, it’s nice to work with him.”
