FC Twente may be somewhat disappointed at drawing Red Bull Salzburg in the Champions League preliminary rounds, as Rangers would have been far more attractive.
That’s according to journalist Leon ten Voorde, who admits he was disappointed that the Dutch club, who he follows exclusively, were not matched with Philippe Clement’s Rangers.
The Champions League third round qualifying draw took place this week, seeing the initial rounds of the competition planned out.
Rangers are one of the seeded teams in the draw and will take on either Dynamo Kiev or FK Partizan after qualifying for the competition via their finish in the Scottish Premiership last season.
It’s the start of a long qualifying process for Clement and his Rangers squad, who will enter the play-off round if they can qualify from the third qualifying round in the new Champions League format.
They’ve managed to avoid several bigger sides who have qualified via the league path, with Slavia Prague, LOSC Lille and FC Salzburg all seeded alongside them.
The latter will be taking on Twente from the Netherlands, something it seems Ten Voorde is particularly disappointed about.
“I would have liked Rangers FC the most, in terms of atmosphere and experience,” he said.
“I also think that you might have had the best chance against Rangers. Slavia Prague may be the least appealing, but they have eighteen international players and a transfer value that is much higher than that of FC Twente. They have participated in the Champions League thirteen times.”
