Birmingham City have reportedly shown interest in hiring Vitória Guimarães manager Pedro Martins to be their boss for next season.

According to Portuguese newspaper O Jogo today, the Championship club have made contact to know the manager’s availability, but have received a negative response for now.

Martins is said to be currently focused on the cup final he has against Benfica at the end of the month, as it’s a chance to give Vitória de Guimarães a rare title, and won’t get into negotiations with Birmingham City or any other clubs until then.

The manager has impressed this season, reaching fourth place in the league, which isn’t an easy job. Behind Benfica, Porto and Sporting, it’s usually Braga who then have a gap to others.

That’s one of the reasons why Birmingham City would trust Martins to be the man to guide them back to the big time.

But, hang on, Birmingham have Harry Redknapp and are very much still in the honeymoon period. It would be hard to imagine things being rosier.

Maybe this is an old approach, reported as otherwise by O Jogo, or perhaps Birmingham and Redknapp haven’t ruled out a change in structure.
