Sporting Club de Portugal are eyeing a move for Manchester City defender Sergio Gómez and a potential repeat of the deal that allowed them to sign Pedro Porro.
That’s according to O Jogo, who report that the Portuguese side are considering a move for the full-back in the summer transfer window.
The newspaper reports that the 23-year-old is seen as a ‘great investment’ by those in charge at Sporting, who want to use a strategy similar to the one they negotiated for Pedro Porro a few years ago.
He was initially brought in on loan from Manchester City with a purchase clause for €8.5m, which was later exercised and he was then sold to Tottenham for €45m in 2023.
The hope is that Gómez could be signed in a similar deal. His current deal with Manchester City runs until 2026 but he’s barely featured under Pep Guardiola and ‘would certainly welcome’ the move to the Portuguese champions.
They can offer him Champions League football and regular minutes, a far cry from Manchester City, where he managed just 15 appearances totalling 449 minutes last season.
Whether Manchester City will sanction such a move isn’t known, but it seems Sporting will be exploring the idea and hoping that previous deal for Porro can be repeated.
