Newcastle United this weekend had scouts at a game which will be remembered in Portugal for many years.
As reported by newspaper O Jogo, the Magpies sent emissaries for the league match between Porto and Benfica, with the Dragons thrashing the Eagles 5-0.
The outlet claims that Newcastle were one of the clubs ‘taking notes about some players’, although their specific targets aren’t revealed.
It’s been a while since the Magpies were last linked to a Benfica player, with them being said to be interested in centre-back Antonio Silva at the start of the season. Needless to say, the defender had a poor performance last night, despite all the potential he’s been showing.
It’s hard to guess who Newcastle may have watched from Porto as well, as their last links were with Mehdi Taremi last summer, and the striker didn’t make it to the game last night.
So it seems the Magpies may have some fresh targets in mind, with Porto’s Galeno, Wendell, Nico Gonzalez and Francisco Conceição having an excellent performance which may have drawn some attention.
Such an unusual score between the two biggest clubs in Portugal will certainly weigh on the scouts’ opinion on those players on the pitch, for the good or the bad.
