It seems that Barcelona’s interest in Arsenal star Gabriel Martinelli is a rumour which will continue to grow ahead of the summer window.
This week, we already covered a front story from Mundo Deportivo which said the Camp Nou side are ‘closely following’ the Brazilian, making clear he’s one of their main targets for the next season, which will not have Xavi in charge of the club.
Now it’s from the Italian media that some of those rumours come. The freshest claims are made by Sky journalist Luca Marchetti, who spoke to Radio Marte and is quoted by CalcioNapoli24.
The market specialist had been speaking about Barcelona’s transfer plans, and suggested that the Arsenal star is a more affordable target for them.
“Barça like some footballers who would respect what they are looking for. Leaving aside Mohamed Salah, who is considered the best to play on both flanks, but is impossible due to his cost, Gabriel Martinelli is being monitored by the club,” said Marchetti.
Even though he’s right in saying Mohamed Salah is expected to be a very expensive player, we can’t help but wonder whether Martinelli is actually affordable for Barcelona, especially given their current financial situation.
The Brazilian is protected by Arsenal with a contract until 2027, with an option for an extra year, and is currently valued by Transfermarkt at €85m.
It’s hard to imagine the Gunners letting him go that easily, and you would think they would ask for a fee upwards of €100m to let such a talented asset leave.
