Because of the mistakes Gianluigi Donnarumma has been making at Paris Saint-Germain, there has been a lot of talk in Italy about Tottenham’s Guglielmo Vicario.
That’s because the Spurs goalkeeper has been in good form this season since arriving from Empoli to replace Hugo Lloris, but still doesn’t have a cap for his country, which will be high on his list of goals.
With his Tottenham form very commendable, there are some who believe he should be given a chance ahead of Donnarumma, and former international Marco Amelia is among them, as he explained in an interview with Mediagol.
Asked whether he feels Vicario could end up supplanting his Paris residing competition, he said: “Performance is what counts. Vicario is doing very well at Tottenham. He comes from two great season with Empoli. He can question roles. The national team is like that.”
Amelia recalls that life was a bit tougher for him, since he had to deal with none other than Gianluigi Buffon as competition, but even he managed to get 10 appearances for his country.
As for the Tottenham man, it appears that patience is the key here, and while he won’t be hoping Donnarumma keeps making mistakes, the chance for him will eventually come, and he will need to grab it with both hands when it does.
