West Ham United may need as much as €40m if they are to sign Steven Bergwijn from Ajax in the January transfer window.
That’s according to Ajax Showtime, who say the Dutch side would want a major offer to convince them to sell the Dutch winger.
The website explains that Ajax may consider selling players who have been at the club for some time as they look to balance the books and refresh the squad after a disastrous campaign.
Bergwijn is one such player and has already been linked with a move away in January, with West Ham and Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq already having been linked.
Ajax Showtime now say that while he is valued at around €20m, so considerably less than the €31.25m they paid to sign him from Tottenham in July last year, the Dutch club ‘would rather aim’ for around €40m for the forward if they were to sell him.
Whether that’s a price West Ham would be willing to spend isn’t mentioned, but it would be a big fee for a player who has hardly set the world alight since returning to the Netherlands.
They had already been warned that they’d need a big fee if they were as keen on Bergwijn as stated, and this is just further confirmation of that.
