Leeds United’s Junior Firpo hasn’t made an appearance this season as an injury has forced him to spend the last two months on the sidelines.
The left-back has admitted he’s now close to regaining full fitness and is eager to get back on the pitch.
“Right now I feel very good, I am almost recovered from my last injury with a lot of desire to play with the team again,” he said, as quoted by Momento Deportivo RD.
This would certainly please Daniel Farke and Leeds, who have picked up six points from five league games this season.
The 27-year-old was born in the Dominican Republic and has yet to make an international debut even though he represented Spain’s youth team earlier in his career.
The Dominican Republic football association’s president, Félix Rubén García Ciprián, and the national team manager, Marcelo Neveleff, recently made a trip to England to hold talks with the Leeds player.
Junior, who has followed Dominican football closely, admits to having held productive talks with both men, where they presented their project to him.
“We had a very good talk here in England, very productive in which I could see the direction of Dominican football is in good hands right now and that it has a promising future,” Junior explained.
“And yes, obviously they presented me with the entire project and all the ideas that exist for the future of football in the Dominican Republic, as I have said it was a very healthy and good conversation.”
As things stands, the Leeds fullback has not yet made a final decision on whether to represent the Dominican Republic after making appearances for Spain’s U21s earlier on in his career.
“It’s a pride and an honour that the Dominican fans await my arrival to the national team. But well, in the end I am always cautious with my words, I don’t like to get anyone’s hopes up or make promises and then not keep them,” he added.
