Brentford outcast Sergi Canós remains a key target for Valencia, but they risk losing out on the player as new bidders AEK Athens and Anderlecht are ‘bidding hard’ for the Spaniard.
That’s according to Levante El Mercantil Valenciano and Plaza Deportiva, who both cover the developing transfer battle for the player today.
Levante EMV kick things off by stating that Canós is the player ‘chosen by Valencia’ to reinforce the wing positions in Rubén Baraja’s team and those in charge at the Mestalla are ‘in negotiations’ with Brentford trying to work out a deal.
They don’t want to pay a fee for Canós and are instead trying to work out a deal where Brentford would receive a percentage of any future sale.
The player retuned to England yesterday for the start of pre-season training and it’s believed he will try to work on the club to accept Valencia’s proposal. The ‘next few days are key’ in the operation as a result.
Plaza Deportiva, meanwhile, say that Valencia are playing their cards in an attempt to beat the competition to Canós’ signature.
They explain that the Spanish side’s financial problems mean the deal, which had seemed imminent, is being held up and other suitors are moving in.
Brentford are currently requesting the payment of a ‘small amount’ for the transfer to happen, but Valencia don’t want to pay and are instead waiting for the Bees to ‘lower their claims’.
Getting Canós on a free seems complicated as Brentford extended his contract by a year this summer but Valencia are hoping for the temptation of the percentage of a future sale can sway their thinking.
That’s yet to happen and while Valencia continue to work on the deal, there is a risk that Canós ‘will get tired of waiting’ and sign for another club, with AEK and Anderlecht having ‘entered the bid’.
