Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Fábio Silva insists working under Ruud van Nistelrooy at PSV Eindhoven has helped his development.
Wolves terminated the forward’s loan deal with Anderlecht in January and then allowed him to seal a temporary move to the Dutch club. He has managed four goals and an assist from 11 games for PSV.
Speaking to Voetbal International, relayed by Soccernews.nl, the 20-year-old explained why Van Nistelrooy was one of the key factors for picking the Eredivisie side.
“That was a very important reason for me to go to PSV. Also about the club, because I am ambitious,” he said.
“PSV are a top club, we are playing for the title and we can still win the cup. But for me as a striker it is of course fantastic to work with Van Nistelrooy. He was one of the best strikers in the world.
“It also helps me to train and play with Luuk [de Jong], of course. Luuk has a lot of experience and as a captain he gives me good advice. To work with two such strikers makes me a very happy footballer.”
The Portugal U21 international’s loan deal lasts until the end of this season. His displays have pleased Van Nistelrooy, so much so that he has urged PSV to make an effort to retain him next season. To do this, the Eindhoven club will have to find an agreement with Wolves.
Silva, who struggled to have a prominent role at Wolves, has now joined his loan manager in expressing his desire to continue at PSV.
“If it’s up to me, I’ll definitely stay here for another season because I think it’s good for my development,” Silva explained.
“The last goal we scored against Cambuur, with Xavi, Anwar and me, showed how much fun we have together, I would like to continue that. But like I said, it’s not always up to me. Moreover, my focus must first be fully on the title race and the cup tournament. I want to win trophies here and I believe we can still become champions.”
Silva has a contract at Wolves until 2026 and it needs to be seen if Julen Lopetegui’s side will let him return to PSV on loan in the summer.
