In July, we covered claims from Spain which stated Newcastle United were in the picture to sign Marco Asensio from Real Madrid.
The player’s contract expires at the end of the current season, and at that time there was no sign of a renewal. Therefore, Asensio would have been available for a cut-price amount.
In September it was reported, again in Spain, that Newcastle are ‘on the prowl’ for the signing, with a view towards a move in the January window.
Italy’s Calciomercato now briefly cover AC Milan interest, and they present the Magpies as competition for the Rossoneri. Serie A clubs would likely want to wait for the chance of getting Asensio as a free agent at the end of June, and Milan would feel they have an advantage over Newcastle due to their status.
That said, the Italian media also felt Sven Botman would reject all attempts from the Premier League club in the hope of signing for Milan… but that didn’t turn out to be the case.
Elsewhere in Italy, Juventus are also being reported as a contender.
The 26-year-old got just two minutes on Sunday as Real Madrid beat Barcelona 3-1.
