Running down his contract at Arsenal, Alexandre Lacazette decided it was time to leave England and return to France, more specifically his former club Lyon.
His return has gone rather well, with the striker scoring four goals and assisting another in nine league appearances to date, but Lyon as a whole have been rather dire.
They have lost their last four games, most recently suffering a 1-0 defeat to RC Lens, and many are questioning the team as a whole, as well as the former Arsenal man’s leadership skills.
Lyon legend Sidney Govou was among those to criticise Lacazette, putting aside his qualities as a footballer and focusing more on the man himself.
He told L’Equipe: “Lacazette, I love him as a player, he’s a very good technical leader on the pitch, but I’m not sure he’s the type to clash with others or to lead in the dressing room. He’s rather taciturn.”
Immediately reinstated as the club’s captain when he returned to Lyon, Lacazette was also captain at Arsenal from time to time, but we all know how the last few years have gone for the Gunners.
They’ve improved a lot after their summer clear-out and subsequent spending, currently topping the Premier League and recently beating their north London rivals Tottenham 3-1.
Prior to his move back to Lyon, Lacazette had made 206 appearances for Arsenal in all competitions, scoring 71 goals and assisting another 36.
