Never really managing to make English football his own, Gabriel Obertan, released by Newcastle United in May after spending five years at the club, could be on his way back to the Premier League.
After leaving Newcastle, Obertan moved to Anzhi Makhachkala back in August on a free transfer, where he made nine appearances. The winger is now once again without a club after the Russian side cancelled a few contracts for financial reasons, including Obertan’s.
Sam Allardyce is desperately trying to bring some reinforcements this transfer window, having already acquired Jeffrey Schlupp from Leicester, and a new winger has been touted as a potential arrival, as exemplified by the club’s interest in Ludogorets’ Jonathan Cafu.
Alongside Crystal Palace, Bursaspor in Turkey, Legia Warsaw and AEK Athens are also listed as interested in the former Newcastle player, but you’d think that a return to the Premier League, if possible, would be attractive to Obertan at this stage in his career.
We can’t see Crystal Palace fans being particularly thrilled by this link, considering the player totalled two goals and seven assists in 71 Premier League appearance during his time in England, but depth is depth, and if he can help the Eagles avoid relegation in some shape or form, then it’ll be considered a decent signing.
