With Newcastle United close to announcing the signing of Alexander Isak from Real Sociedad, Eddie Howe is about to get the striker he’s been asking for.
Now, whether that’s the only attacking reinforcement the Magpies will be getting before the end of the transfer window remains to be seen, since there appears to be an interest in Memphis Depay.
The Dutchman, currently at Barcelona, is trying to get himself out of his deal with the La Liga side, and following Juventus’ signing of Arkadiusz Milik, a move back to the Premier League is being touted.
Manchester United are reportedly keen, but Calciomercato in Italy believe Newcastle are too.
They state that because Juventus failed to sell Rabiot to the Old Trafford side, they had to offer Depay a lower contract than initially anticipated, which the forward didn’t want to hear about.
Interest from the Premier League, which is where Newcastle are mentioned, meant that he was standing by his €9m/year wage demands, which led to the Serie A side to move along and sign the Pole on loan from Marseille.
That is, of course, Juventus’ side of things, but Calciomercato report that ‘the player’s entourage showed disappointment about the lack of agreement’, as they claim Depay ‘did not ask for more money and was ready to leave for Turin’.
Either way, he’s still looking for a new club, and with Barcelona ready to let him go for potentially very little, it could be a coup for Newcastle, with a need to see off the Red Devils in the process.
