The Portuguese media are an excitable lot, and none more so than Record on Sunday. Claiming Goncalo Guedes could be imminently joining Manchester United or PSG, and was set to say his farewells to the Benfica support, there was always going to be an update after the Tondela match.

Benfica beat Tondela 4-0 without Guedes, who was wasn’t included in the eleven, or even on the bench, and that only served to encourage Record further who had half-predicted such a scenario.

With the claims being picked up in England and the reporting pushing Guedes further towards a Manchester United move, even though it wouldn’t seem to suit either the player or Jose Mourinho’s club, Benfica’s manager was asked about it after the game.

Rui Vitoria is quoted by Record as saying:  “The coach is here to make decisions and I decided that he was not picked for this game, there were others to play and I chose that way, I do not have any indication that Goncalo is going to leave, the president knows what to do about ‘Gonçalos’.”

It seems Benfica are keen to sell a player in the current transfer window, and Goncalo Guedes is the new Victor Lindelof. Benfica will hope Manchester United will be receptive.
