Spanish newspaper Sport report Aston Villa remain in the picture to sign Luis Suarez this summer.
The Uruguay international has a contract with Atletico Madrid which expires at the end of June, so is able to find a new club and join as a free agent.
According to the report, Aston Villa have been ‘interested for the longest time’. Sevilla and Inter Milan are also credited with interest, but it’s the Steven Gerrard connection at Villa which has caught widespread attention.
Suarez was seen to be in tears at the weekend, during Atletico’s match with Sevilla. It had already been announced he’d be leaving, and fans sent their love via the stands, which made the striker clearly emotional.
Given that he’s 35-years-of-age, signing Suarez is going to be a gamble for whichever club moves forward. That said, he’s scored 13 goals this season, which is pretty impressive given he’s not played many full matches.
Last season he found the back of the net 21 times, helping Atletico to the Spanish title.
Aston Villa interest may well depend on the type of deal Suarez is looking for, but a short-term contract could provide the chance for him to return to English football, where he was so successful for Liverpool.
