Wolverhampton Wanderers are ‘very interested’ in Barcelona midfielder Nico Gonzalez, should the Catalans make the youngster available this summer.
That’s according to Sport, who say there is a ‘debate’ about the midfielder’s future at the club.
They explain that super-agent Jorge Mendes, who represents the player, ‘has offers’ for both a loan and a full transfer this year.
Barcelona are currently debating what role Nico will play in the side moving forwards, particularly next year when they will be bolstered by the arrival of Franck Kessie on a free transfer from Inter Milan.
That pushes Nico further down the pecking order, and in a busy summer when Barcelona are willing to listen to offers for any player, it could lead to his departure.
There is currently an ‘internal debate’ about his future, something which has been caused by Mendes, who is closely tied to Wolves, of course, making it clear he has offers for his client.
Wolves are one of those who are ‘very interested’ in the player, and Mendes is pushing for a definitive answer from Barcelona over what they plan to do with the 20-year-old.
The Portuguese agent could secure a permanent exit or a loan deal but first needs Barca to make a decision, particularly as the youngster’s contract expires in 2024, so may need to be renewed.
On the face of it, a departure would make sense, given he faces being behind Busquets, De Jong, Pedri, Gavi, Kessié, and even Sergi Roberto in the midfield pecking order next season.
Barcelona are also looking at adding another player to that mix, with Wolves own Ruben Neves ‘one of the chosen ones’ they are considering.
Mendes believes that the player could be a ‘fundamental piece’ at another club and has enough market power to use the player in an exchange operation.
First, though, Barcelona need to make their mind up whether they want to keep him or let him go in the summer.
