Belgian side Antwerp are eyeing a move for Christian Eriksen in the summer transfer window, should he leave Brentford.
That’s according to analyst Eddy Snelders, who says there is a ‘special rumour’ that Antwerp chief Marc Overmars could look to sign the former Ajax man.
Eriksen joined Brentford on a free transfer at the end of the January transfer window after being released by Inter Milan.
He has gotten his career back on track with the Bees, batting away concerns about his health to establish himself as a star and prove he can still compete at the top end of the game.
His contract with Brentford only runs until June this year, though, meaning it remains to be seen whether he stays with Thomas Frank’s side or moves elsewhere.
Several clubs are thought to be eyeing up a potential deal, and Antwerp can now be added to that list, according to Snelders.
“He is an interesting route to take. There is talk of that possibility,” Voetbal Nieuws report him saying on Het Niuewsblad’s Sjotcast podcast.
Their interest comes via director of football Marc Overmars, who was hired by the Belgian club last month following his departure from Ajax in February.
He’s an ‘old acquaintace’ of Eriksen’s, having been in charge at Ajax during Eriksen’s time there and even been the man who sold him to Tottenham in 2013.
That’s a relationship he can take advantage of, although VN do say that Snelders questions whether Antwerp have ‘enough clout’ to sign the 30-year-old if he leaves Brentford.
We’d suggest that they don’t, and he’d be better staying with the Bees, but perhaps that relationship with Overmars could tempt the scale in Antwerp’s favour.
