Last week we covered claims from Germany that Borussia Monchengladbach were starting to give up on Andreas Christensen. Dearly wanting to keep the defender beyond the end of his two year loan from Chelsea, Gladbach had considered another loan or a permanent transfer.
Chelsea, however, hadn’t been receptive, and that led Gladbach to the transfer market. Earlier this month they signed Timothée Kolodziejczak and the German club’s general manager Max Eberl explained: “Kolo is a small indicator that Andreas does not stay. What is going on with Christensen in the summer has yet to be clarified.”
Danish newspaper BT have since spoken to the player’s father Sten Christensen, who have further underlined that a return to Chelsea is what is happening.
In an article headline ‘Back to Star Wars: Huge Danish talent to return home to Premier League’, BT say Christensen will arrive at Chelsea in the summer.
Sten is quoted as saying: “Chelsea would like Andreas back, and that they have wanted that for a long time. But it was an unbreakable two-year lease, so there was nothing to do. They have worked to get him back before the time, but Gladbach would not let him. Instead, they’d like to buy Andreas.”
That doesn’t mean Christensen will 100% play for Chelsea next season, because it depends on who is brought in. There could be an opportunity for Gladbach to have a go at signing Christensen but his father thinks the price may be too high.
“As it is right now, he’s at Chelsea again this summer. It is important for Andreas that he plays. He will not return to Chelsea and sit on the bench. It is the transfer window which determines how Andreas’ situation becomes in the summer. If Chelsea buy ten central defenders, it may well be that we need to do something else.”
It would be foolish if Antonio Conte isn’t seriously considering Christensen for his team, and the Chelsea manager is no fool. With Kurt Zouma, Nathan Ake and Christensen, Chelsea have a solid selection for the future.
BT point out that Christensen would slot easily into Conte’s three at the back, having played in similar formations for Borussia Monchengladbach and Denmark, which makes him pretty much perfect.
