Matheus Nunes wasn’t able to take part in Sporting’s Champions League trip to Manchester City, because he was serving an unfortunate suspension.

In the first leg, despite the Lisbon club losing 5-0, he’d put in a reasonable performance. Around the tie, Pep Guardiola also sent some praise to the player, pushing him forward as one of the best midfielders in the world.

Tuesday’s edition of Record has an interesting article on the player and a potential move to Manchester City.

Things are only at a very early stage, but it’s stated Nunes’ name was raised informally during a meeting between Sporting’s Frederico Varandas and Hugo Viana, and City’s Ferran Soriano and Txiki Begiristain.

Interestingly, the meeting was held over a meal at Tast Catala, the Manchester restaurant (It’s really very good!) owned by Pep Guardiola.

The chat wasn’t just about Nunes, with Record saying the possibility of ‘deepening the partnership that links the clubs’ was also discussed.

Matheus Nunes is protected by a €60m release, and reportedly came close to an Everton move last summer… only for Rafa Benitez to stop it.

Sporting would be looking for a fee close to the clause, although they ‘could be flexible’ and take part of it as potential bonus payments, similar to what they did with Bruno Fernandes.

The ‘doors are open’ for a possible summer move.

Again, this is all in the early stages for Manchester City, and it’s a situation to keep an eye on.
