With Marcelo Bielsa sacked from his role at Leeds United and since replaced by Jesse Marsch, many people are now talking about the Argentine manager.

Having managed in France, Spain, Mexico and Argentina at club level (we’ll ignore the three day Lazio spell), many have had a chance to speak with him, including former Chelsea goalkeeping coach Christophe Lollichon.

Now a pundit on RMC Sport, he was asked to speak about Bielsa and his legacy at Leeds, where he recalled a 50 minute conversation he had with the manager on a hill overlooking the Elland Road side’s training grounds during which Bielsa revealed to him his tactical dream.

He said: “He ended up telling me something at the end. He said: ‘Christophe, you know my dream?’ I replied no, win a title maybe? He replied: ‘It would be to play a three at the back formation with the goalkeeper at the base. But for that I would need two to three years of work and I’ll never have the time at Leeds’.”

Now, whether he meant that he wanted the goalkeeper to play ahead of the defence as the defensive midfielder or simply have the goalkeeper at the heart of a back three (in a more libero role) isn’t clear, although the latter makes more sense and is a bit less crazy.

Then again, Bielsa was known for his eccentric tactical style, something he made a career out of, which won him many fans, especially at Leeds until this season.

We will now have to see what is next for the Argentine, as he is 66 years of age and could decide to finally call it a day after his Elland Road spell.

Either that, or he starts working on his dream tactical setup.
