Earlier linked to Matias Vecino, it appears that Newcastle United are targeting a number of midfielders to see if one sticks.
The Magpies were said to have had ‘encouraging contacts’ with the Uruguayan’s agents, but he isn’t the only one they are looking at.
According to Foot Mercato, Newcastle are ‘preparing an offer’ for AS Roma midfielder Jordan Veretout to ‘try and acquire his services’ in January.
The problem here is that the Frenchman is an ‘indisputable starter’ under José Mourinho in Italy, and that could be an issue.
Then again, money always talks, but a lot will depend on whether Veretout will want to return to England after a previous disappointing spell with Aston Villa earlier on in his career.
He does have Premier League experience, though, which could be invaluable in Newcastle’s attempts to avoid relegation to the Championship, which is probably why they are targeting him in the first place.
