While the recent Newcastle United takeover has sent tongues wagging all around Europe on the transfer market, there is a continuous line being fed to some outlets that the new owners will take their time and ensure no gun is jumped.
That means bids for Kylian Mbappé, Erling Haaland and Ansu Fati will have to wait, and more logical and affordable targets will be looked at at first, with the aim of having a structure to their recruitment that allows them to grow without breaking their very large bank.
One of the first port of calls once they have replaced Steve Bruce will be to bolster a leaky defence, with Clément Lenglet and Wesley Fofana already being looked at, while a new striker wouldn’t go amiss at St James’ Park.
Neither Joelinton nor Callum Wilson have done much this season to date, and perhaps fresh blood is needed up front to help boost a dwindling attack.
The story comes from Jeunes Footeux in France, who explain that, according to their own information, both West Ham and the Magpies are ‘closely interested’ the FC Copenhagen star, who has eight goals in 18 games to his name so far this season.
The player would be a great addition to either squad, but the Danish side will want to ensure any transfer is financially correct for them, which is why the website state there is ‘little chance’ they will ‘accept to negotiate below €20m’.
A transfer of that fee in January certainly would fit the “slower” start the Newcastle owners seem to have planned for the club, ensuring they bring adequate reinforcements to avoid relegation this year and start their proper rebuild from next summer onwards.
Furthermore, investing in a talented 22-year-old whose physique (1m90) is ready made for the Premier League certainly isn’t anything to turn your nose up at, as a good manager could quickly turn Wind into a star with the right tactics and support.
Just something to think about…
