Reading retain a ‘serious interest’ in signing Ajax midfielder Thulani Serero, reports Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf.
The 26-year-old hasn’t made a single appearance for the Eredivisie club this season, and has a contract until next summer.
Reading’s director of football, Brian Tevreden, has also confirmed that he has had a chat with Serero’s agent.
He said: “I have indeed spoken to his agent to know about the possibilities.”
Tevreden, however, insists the club doesn’t want Serero to block the development of others, and that they haven’t made a decision on him yet.
He added: “Jaap Stam believes Thulani is a good player, but we have to see if he doesn’t block young players in his position. Therefore, we haven’t taken a final decision yet.”
De Telegraaf say Tevreden is assuming Serero would be allowed to leave Ajax for free in January, which is likely.
Ajax wanted the South Africa international to find a new club during the summer, and when he failed to they excluded him from the squad and decided not to issue the player with a shirt number for the current season.
The Dutch club would likely drive Serero to Reading and present him to Stam gift-wrapped, such is their willingness to move on from a situation which has brought Ajax criticism.
