Celtic, Rangers and Aberdeen included in European Super League plan, meetings taking place

 

Celtic and Rangers, and Aberdeen are involved in a new European super league plan, a story which is making its way across Europe.

Aberdeen and Glasgow clubs Rangers and Celtic have been included in super league plans before, but this one, which originated in Denmark, is one of the Nordic versions.

Spanish newspaper Sport are intrigued by the plans and explain the idea is to generate extra TV revenue for the clubs involved. Big nights at Celtic Park, Rangers’ Ibrox, and Aberdeen’s Pittodrie Stadium would see the likes of Ajax and Gothenburg visiting.

As well as the Scottish Premier League trio, clubs from Denmark, the Netherlands, Sweden, Belgium and Norway would also take part.

It’s claimed that meetings have been taking place between the clubs, and is presented more as a plan rather than a idea, but the Scottish clubs mentioned, especially Rangers and Celtic, have been involved in so many of these reported plans, that they know the likelihood is nothing will come of it.

The motivation for the latest plan is the new Champions League rules, which will marginalise some clubs.

CEO of Copenhagen, Anders Horsholt, is quoted as saying: “If we do not act now we will see how the most important clubs become even stronger as it becomes more difficult for organisations like ours. We must go for alternative international opportunities.

“We must be attractive to sponsors and get good players. To do this we must move to another European level.”

The presence of Celtic, Rangers and Aberdeen would be beneficial to the plans, because of the status of the clubs. Celtic Park holds 60,000, whereas Rangers can host just over 50,000 at Ibrox.

Quite what the rest of the Scottish Premiership would think about it is another thing entirely.
