With Newcastle United’s takeover by new Saudi Arabian owners nearing completion, the number of transfer rumours surrounding the club are likely to explode.
With vast wealth at their disposal, there is a widespread belief that the Magpies will go all out to revamp their squad with big-money, big-name signings.
We’ve already seen numerous rumours before the takeover has even been confirmed and among those has been the name, Dries Mertens.
Well, Corriere Dello Sport have added fuel to that fire today by reporting that Newcastle have indeed sent a proposal to the Belgian striker.
They have had an offer on the table for the last two months, but he is yet to communicate whether he will sign it.
Thus, the vultures are circling eyeing up a bargain and among those to have sent a proposal his way are Newcastle.
There is no mention of when this bid was made, or what it contains, just that they, alongside Chelsea, Monaco and Roma have all made offers to the 32-year-old.
Now, on that list, it’s fair to say that Newcastle would be towards the bottom of his options, but with new, extremely wealthy owners on the way, there’s every chance that could change in the coming months.
Until Mertens makes a decision, the Magpies will seemingly be in the running for what would be an ambitious and audacious signing.
