Slowly but surely, Southampton’s Pierre-Emile Højbjerg is climbing up the list of the most entertaining and favourite players at Sport Witness.
Playing only 63 minutes of Denmark’s surprise loss against Montenegro on Tuesday night before being replaced by Phone Sisto, the 21-year-old couldn’t hide his frustration when talking to the press after the game.
Relayed by Ekstra Bladet, the former Bayern Munich starlet explained the Danish couldn’t hide behind the young team that Åge Hareide fielded, such was the quality within the squad.
He said: “The thing about the young national team, now I’m going to watch what I say, but it’s not worth anything if it doesn’t produce results. It’s got to be the best team that plays. I’ve said it before. It doesn’t matter how young or old you are, it’s all about quality.”
The midfielder continued by saying the team was good enough to qualify for the World Cup, but that the defeat had put them under pressure.
Furthermore, he explained the team as a whole didn’t play fast enough, weren’t dangerous or aggressive enough, and partly blamed the pitch for the poor performance.
Overall, the whole thing was a total disappointment, and the Ekstra Bladet agreed.
They gave him a 1 out of 6.
