Earlier this week, a surprise story popped up in the Italian media, claiming that Manchester United were taking an interest in Napoli’s Giovanni Di Lorenzo.
The Italian has been something of a surprise this season, thriving under both Carlo Ancelotti and Gennaro Gattuso, making the right-back position his own.
His versatility has also been praised, capable of playing further forward or helping out in the centre of defence, and this is likely why Manchester United have started sniffing around.
Already having Aaron Wan-Bissaka as a starter, it seems Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is looking for an experienced back up, as Diogo Dalot appears to prefer a role a bit further up the pitch.
There has been talk of United keeping an eye on Thomas Meunier, whose contract at Paris Saint-Germain expires in June, and Di Lorenzo appears to also be on their radar.
Well, two days later, Corriere dello Sport confirm this, pushing their own story, explaining the Red Devils have ‘informally’ probed the player’s position.
However, and it’s a big one, Napoli see the defender as a ‘pillar for the future’, exemplified by his current contract keeping him at the club until 2024.
This means Aurelio De Laurentiis will need some convincing if he is to let Di Lorenzo go, and considering this is all for what would be a backup option, perhaps investing in Meunier might be a better idea.
