Over the past few years, Real Madrid’s Gareth Bale has been linked with a move to Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur during every summer transfer window.
However, neither the Red Devils nor Spurs have been able to take the Welshman away from the 13-time European champions.
Real Madrid last won the Champions League in 2018 and the 30-year-old was the star for his side in the final against Liverpool.
Minutes after the final whistle, the forward admitted he could consider his future at the Spanish capital club, and there was interest from Manchester United that summer.
José Mourinho was manager at Old Trafford and the Portuguese tactician wanted the club to sign Bale.
Bale’s agent Jonathan Barnett has given a lengthy interview to AS and during the course of the chat, the representative was asked why United failed to sign his client when Mourinho was at the club.
Responding to that, Barnett said: “Then Gareth was not for sale.”
Last summer, there were claims of interest from China, but Bale ended up staying at Santiago Bernabéu. Barnett explained why the deal never materialised.
“He had an offer that was impossible to refuse, but Madrid did not want to sell. The Chinese club could not pay what Madrid asked for a transfer,” Bale’s representative explained.
“Yes, he wanted to leave a legacy. Help make football shine there. He had a vision, which could make Chinese football great. And it was a lot of money, yes. They would have made him the highest paid player in the world.”
