PSV had very much wanted to sign Patrick van Aanholt this month.
Prior to selling Steven Bergwijn to Tottenham Hotspur, it was explained repeatedly in the Dutch media that the Crystal Palace player was a wanted man.
There was an assumption that the sale of Bergwijn would help PSV come up with the funds needed to please Palace, having already had at least one offer rejected by the Premier League club.
Today’s edition of De Telegraaf pretty much rules out PSV’s chances of getting Van Aanholt, and part of the reasoning is Roy Hodgson.
The Crystal Palace manager is presented as being ‘dissatisfied’ with the club’s business during the January window, and selling Van Aanholt therefore wouldn’t go down very well.
PSV were ready to pay a ‘hefty’ transfer fee to Palace, and make a real effort on wages, although Van Aanholt would have had to compromise too, but it seems no deal will be happening unless Hodgson is given a reason to feel happier about the January window.
Ricardo Rodriguez is the new target for the Dutch club.
