Francesco Guidolin was last in work as a manager with Swansea City in 2016, and since then has been working as a pundit on Italian TV.
He has a good reputation in Italian football and spent four years with Udinese from 2010-2014. Speaking to the media at the weekend, he made it clear, if it were down to him he wouldn’t mind working for the Pozzo family again.
Asked about the family, who own both Watford and Udinese, Guidolin is quoted by Gazzetta dello Sport as saying: “The Pozzo model? The European years lived by Udinese have perhaps upset the reality: the starting dimension must always be to conquer the 40 points to save oneself. At Watford I don’t know what happened, but the Premier is the most competitive championship in the world. If the Pozzo family had offered me the chance to train them I would certainly have agreed to talk about it: working in the Premier League is stimulating.”
The manager didn’t only flirt with Watford, but also QPR and other clubs in England’s second tier: “I am also fascinated by the Championship. There have been a couple of contacts with QPR, but they have not been followed up.”
QPR are currently managed by Mark Warburton and have been since May of this year. Guidolin wasn’t clear over when the contact with the London club took place, and there’s every chance it goes back a while.
There have been doubts around Warburton’s future in recent weeks, and it seems clear that should QPR look for a new way forward, then there’s a certain Italian who wouldn’t mind having a chat with them again.
