Despite starting all five games in the Women’s Super League, Tessa Wullaert isn’t living her best season at Manchester City.

The Belgian forward, currently with her national team for the international break, has only found the back of the net once so far, and tends to be the most readily sacrificed by Nick Cushing in games, subbed off first in three of those five fixtures.

On top of that, Manchester City’s season isn’t going as well as first hoped, which led her to, when speaking to her home country’s press, vent a little about her situation.

Relayed by Le Soir, she said: “It’s always difficult, but I know what I can do if the manager doesn’t use me: my contract is up at the end of the season, so I’m not panicking.”

She added: “[Last year] We were vice-champion and won two cups. Now we’re again knocked out of the Champions League, have lost in the Conti Cup and we lost to Arsenal in the league. It isn’t going well. We’re not creating many chances. The manager has also changed the system and is always looking for the best team, I think.

“Last year, everything was going well. This year, changes were made and it isn’t working. It’s his decision. I feel like the victim of the new system: I haven’t played in my best position. I think that as a foreigner, you’ve got a disadvantage. You have to face English players.”

Things are going a bit better for Wullaert with the Belgium national team, who recently beat Croatia 4-1, and her tally is currently of five assists and a goal in three European Championship qualifier fixtures.

She’s also been made captain, a role she thoroughly enjoys, thriving under the extra responsibility, as she says she ‘thinks more about the three points than her own statistics’.
