In possibly the most surprising result of Wednesday night, Tottenham started their new Champions League campaign with a loss at home (well, Wembley) to AS Monaco.

The Ligue 1 team’s two goals in the first 30 minutes or so were enough to ensure what could be a huge three points come the end of the group stages, and Tottenham will now have to produce a strong result in France to make up for their shortcomings.

However, speaking to L’Equipe after the game, AS Monaco midfielder Tiémoué Bakayoko admitted they might have been a bit lucky in walking away with all the points.

He said: “It was hard, that’s true, but we managed our weak spells well. We had a good goalkeeper with us and they were also a bit clumsy. That’s football. We were a bit lucky.”

Harry Kane throwing away a late a chance to claw back at least one point certainly wasn’t part of the plan, and with an away trip to Moscow to face CSKA on the 27th of September coming up, things aren’t about to get any easier.

The Russian side’s 2-2 draw against Bayer Leverkusen now leaves Tottenham bottom of their group ahead of their upcoming clash, meaning a good result in two weeks time is a must if the London club want to stand a chance of participating in next year’s knockout rounds.
