Sergio Conceiçao hasn’t been in the best of moods recently. Last week the Porto manager appeared to physically threaten and warn a supporter at a youth match.
The manager’s son was playing for Porto in the game, and when a fan gave the player abuse from the stands, Conceiçao leapt into action. Unfortunately there were cameras everywhere.
Then at the weekend he appeared to get physical with an opposition player after Porto’s match, and since then he’s reacted to an agent supposedly offering his services around. Conceiçao doesn’t have an agent and has been left annoyed that an intermediary has offered him to Marseille with no mandate to do so.
So that’s him out of the picture, but L’Equipe report Rafael Benitez very much remains in it. The Newcastle United manager has this week been repeatedly linked with a move to the French club, and he’s one of the main candidates for the role.
L’Equipe explain Marseille have a list of around ten potential new managers, and they don’t appear to have any concrete plan: ‘The tracks are multiple: young or experienced, French or foreign.’
What may be interesting is Marseille’s financial situation. The club aren’t going to be able to fund a big squad improvement, quite the opposite, and is that really what Benitez would be looking for if he leaves Newcastle United?
