West Ham spent much of the January transfer window being linked with any striker they could conceivably sign during the winter market.
Marko Arnautovic’s future was seriously under question, with a move to China presented as imminent at one point, so the Hammers were in the market for a replacement.
Midway through the month, a source close to Maxi Gomez’s situation told Sport Witness that West Ham interest was genuine and not simply an invention of the rumour mill. Despite that, it was also made clear that staying at Celta Vigo until the summer was a very real possibility for the player… and that’s what happened.
Eldesmarque have an update today, saying that after ‘months of self imposed silence’, Gomez has finally spoken to the media about his future.
They explain there’s been links to Barcelona, Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund and West Ham.
Gomez is then quoted as saying: “I don’t know if I’m going or I’m staying. I am now at Celta and I hope it continues like this, helping the team is fundamental.
“Many things come out, I do not look at those things. As I say, I am very happy here and can hopefully continue contributing and helping.”
Mixed messages from the Celta Vigo player, who insisted he hadn’t been distracted by the claims about his future.
