Marco Silva has Everton ninth in the Premier League so far this season and his job certainly isn’t under question.
The Toffees put so much effort into getting him that they’re clearly looking at the long term and a partnership being built with Director of Football Marcel Brands.
But it is still part of Brands’ job to keep an eye on the future and identify possibilities for the day that Silva leaves. One of those could quite possibly be Mark van Bommel.
The 41 year old took over at PSV in June, having been a youth coach at the Dutch club, and is doing very well so far. Eleven wins from eleven games in the Eredivisie is impressive enough, but those games have also seen 39 goals scored and only four conceded.
As Van Bommel takes his side to Wembley to face Tottenham on Tuesday evening, De Telegraaf have spoken to Brands about the manager he appointed before leaving for Everton.
“I noticed very closely what a super professional he was,” Brands told the Dutch newspaper.
Van Bommel was always complaining “But that was because he is a perfectionist. I immediately saw that he had talent as a trainer and that he would become top at that too.
“Three weeks before the start of the season, he had already prepared his training and finished his speech for the first day. Former pros always have an edge in training, but they have to deliver quality. Van Bommel has the quality. I think he will go into Europe in the future and reach the real top. Yes, he will become a top coach.”
De Telegraaf explain that even when appointing Van Bommel, Brands was looking to the future for PSV and ‘did everything to get Ruud van Nistelrooy on the staff’.
The former Manchester United striker is managing PSV’s U19s, following in Van Bommel’s footsteps, and the idea is he could move to the first team at some point in the future.
PSV want to keep their current manager for a few years yet, but after he’s gained more experience, and hopefully won some trophies, it’s suggested the Premier League could come calling.
Everton, depending on their managerial situation at the time, wouldn’t seem the craziest idea.
