Manchester United have failed to find an agreement with David de Gea’s representatives over a new deal, sources have told Sport Witness.

The goalkeeper’s contract runs down at the end of this season and the Red Devils have the option of further extending it by a year, something that would be exercised to keep him at the club until 2020.

Since the start of this calendar year, several reports indicated the 27-year-old was close to signing a new deal, including a few of them in the summer suggesting it was all but done. Earlier in June, Sport Witness were told no such deal had been agreed between the former Atletico Madrid man and the English outfit.

He is represented by Jorge Mendes, who also represents the 20-time English champions’ manager Jose Mourinho. The Portuguese super agent met with an official of the Premier League giants last week and one of the topics discussed during the meeting was that of the Spain international.

United have so far not defined the details of a new deal with De Gea’s representatives, due to which, nothing has been agreed so far. Therefore, should the current situation continue it would see the custodian leave as a free agent when his contract expires at the end of next season.

Ed Woodward, the club’s executive vice-chairman, is likely to come under more pressure from a large section of Manchester United fans if they fail to achieve a more positive slant on this one soon.
