At times during his Southampton career, it’s felt like Pierre-Emile Højbjerg has taken a step forward only to slip back again.
Six days before scoring his first Premier League goal for the Saints against Crystal Palace, the Danish international picked up two yellow cards against Leicester City.
Speaking to TV2, the Southampton player has explained it’s an example of how things can “go up and down” in football. One minute you’re flying, and the next you get another wobble, but this time it was the reverse.
“It was the first time in my career, I was sent off,” Højbjerg explained. “In fact, I never thought it would happen because I have to be – and I am – the type of player that needs to be aware I have a responsibility and I need to know where the boundary is.”
The Southampton player admitted he “crossed the line” and that his two yellow cards were “stupid”, but he’s learned from the experience and told TV2 that it’s “given me some hair on my chest”.
Højbjerg became a much more important player for Southampton last season as the campaign grew older and Mark Hughes took over at the Premier League club. The 23 year old will hope that can continue to be the case this year.
