Manchester City beat Schalke 7-0 on Tuesday evening thanks to goals from Sergio Aguero, who got two, Leroy Sane, Raheem Sterling, Bernardo Silva, Phil Foden and Gabriel Jesus.
This isn’t going down very well in Germany, but there’s another reason the Schalke players are facing criticism.
In February there was something of a mini scandal for the German sport media as it was reported that, prior to losing 3-0 against Tottenham Hotspur, Borussia Dortmund players had invited a celebrity hairdresser to the team hotel to make sure they looked good for the match.
The reaction was no doubt over the top, but combined with Jadon Sancho and a teammate forgetting their passports, and another player losing his boarding pass at the airport, it created a narrative of the squad not really being serious enough in the approach to the match.
That Manchester City then beat Schalke 7-0 obviously doesn’t help.
Bild say it’s ‘incomprehensible’, and state that whilst the players had a ‘good laugh’ it should be a ‘no-go’ on what was a ‘business trip’.
The German newspaper call the whole situation ‘shameful’ and say that after being shaved by the hairdresser, the players were then shaved by Manchester City.
