Feyenoord midfielder Renato Tapia has recalled the trial he had at Liverpool when he was a youngster.
The 24-year-old had a live chat on Instagram with compatriot Miguel Araujo on Wednesday night, reminiscing about stories from their old days.
Tapia says that when playing for Peru in an U17 tournament in Ecuador, scouts from the Reds became interested in taking him to England.
“It was spectacular. We went to the U17 South American in Ecuador. We were in the stadium and people said ‘here is the scout from Lazio, from Liverpool, from a certain team’,” said Tapia (via Libero).
“Within months, I was invited to a trial at Liverpool. In June I went there.”
Tapia has described his time with the Reds as ‘a good experience’, even though he wasn’t able to stay at the club.
Tapia belonged to Club Esther Grande de Bentin at the time, and only moved to Europe in 2013, when signing for Dutch side Twente. After a couple of good years at the club, he was bought by league rivals Feyenoord for €1.5m in 2016.
The midfielder made 26 appearances for Feyenoord this season, and ended up becoming a regular in the Peruvian national team, currently with 53 caps for his country.
