Maurizio Sarri could become a surprise contender for the Everton job after Carlo Ancelotti’s unexpected departure yesterday.
Ancelotti departed Goodison Park in shocking fashion yesterday, returning to Real Madrid for a second spell in charge of the club and leaving the Toffees scrambling to find a replacement.
Despite the short time since Ancelotti’s departure, there have already been several names linked to the vacant position, and we can now add another to that; Sarri.
Calciomercato explain that he’s currently in the running for the Lazio job, having been beaten to the Roma job by Jose Mourinho earlier this year.
They’re closing in on an agreement, but the two parties have given themselves a ’48 hour deadline’ to decide whether or not ‘there will be a future together’.
They’ve set a deadline of Friday to establish if the former Napoli and Juventus coach will sit on the Biancoceleste bench next season, and work is still going on behind the scenes.
Sarri’s agent Fali Ramadani is continuing to study the situation, and while Lazio are pressing to know his decision, the Italian coach is holding out.
That is because he is studying the possibility that there might be other options on the table and ‘nothing is excluded’, including the Everton job, which has just become free.
Sarri would prefer to start with a project that would allow him to re-enter Italian football through the ‘main door’, but there’s a suggestion Everton could tempt him back to England if they came calling.
Whether they will remains to be seen, but if Sarri’s name suddenly starts popping up in England, you know where it’s coming from.
