Chelsea very much had a night to forget against AS Roma on Tuesday night, which is fitting given several of the team had seemingly forgotten how to play football.
Roma were deserved 3-0 winners but it wasn’t a fluke and whilst the Italian club seem to raise their level for matches against Chelsea, Antonio Conte’s men were left without answers and lacked the basic enthusiasm required.
The poor performance has been noted by the Italian media, although the post-match criticism could have been worse given what was on display.
Gazzetta dello Sport’s player ratings give Chelsea a spectrum of 4-6, and Roma 6.5-8, meaning they don’t think any of Conte’s team were better than the home side’s worst player. The manager himself got 5/10 in contrast to Eusebio Di Francesco’s 8.
Alvaro Morata was named ‘the worst’ (Il Peggiore) and Eden Hazard considered the best of a bad bunch.
Corriere dello Sport were even less impressed and gave out a series of 4/10s, including to Conte.
Chelsea’s midfield especially let the manager down, believe the Italian newspaper, which shows the blow of having no N’Golo Kante available for the trip to Rome.
